Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP Uses a Concentration of Your Own Platelets. Start With an Evaluation to See if It May Be Appropriate.

Platelet-rich plasma, commonly called PRP, is prepared from a sample of your own blood. The blood is processed to concentrate platelets within plasma before the prepared PRP is used as part of a clinical procedure.

At BioRenew Integrative Medicine, PRP is not recommended simply because a patient has pain, an injury or another concern. Kimberly Pierson, PA-C begins with a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether PRP or another treatment approach may be appropriate for the individual patient.

Autologous

PRP is prepared from a sample of the patient's own blood.

Evaluation First

Candidacy depends on the individual concern, clinical findings and goals.

Precise Planning

When appropriate, image guidance may be used for selected musculoskeletal procedures.

Individualized Care

PRP is one possible option within a broader personalized treatment plan.

Understanding PRP

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelets are components of blood best known for their role in clotting. They also contain proteins and signaling molecules involved in normal biological processes following tissue injury.

To prepare PRP, a patient's blood is collected and processed using a PRP preparation system. This separates and concentrates platelets within a portion of the plasma. The resulting platelet-rich plasma can then be used by the clinician as part of a planned procedure.

  • Prepared from your own blood
  • Processed at the point of care
  • Concentrates platelets in plasma
  • Used as part of selected procedures
  • Requires clinical evaluation
  • Not appropriate for every patient
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Follow-up based on the procedure
Where PRP May Be Considered

PRP Is One Tool — Not a One-Size-Fits-All Treatment

Joint & Musculoskeletal Concerns

PRP may be considered in selected musculoskeletal situations after evaluation of the affected joint, surrounding structures, symptoms, function and individual circumstances.

Tendon & Soft-Tissue Concerns

Certain tendon or soft-tissue problems may be evaluated for procedures involving PRP. Whether it is appropriate depends on the diagnosis, clinical findings and treatment goals.

Hair & Scalp Applications

PRP is also used by some clinicians in selected hair and scalp procedures. BioRenew evaluates the pattern of hair loss and relevant individual factors before discussing whether PRP may be considered.

Other Individualized Applications

PRP has been used in a variety of clinical settings. BioRenew does not assume that PRP is appropriate based solely on a symptom or desired outcome. Each potential use begins with an individualized evaluation.

Evaluation Before Procedure

The Question Isn't Simply “Do You Offer PRP?”

The more important question is whether PRP makes sense for your particular concern.

BioRenew's approach is to understand the problem first. Kimberly considers your clinical history, examination, functional limitations, treatment history and available diagnostic information before discussing appropriate options.

PRP may be one option. In other situations, a different regenerative, image-guided, nerve-focused, mobility or conservative approach may make more sense.

  • Comprehensive consultation
  • Clinical evaluation
  • Review of relevant imaging
  • Functional assessment
  • Previous-treatment review
  • PRP candidacy discussion
  • Alternative options when appropriate
  • Individual care planning

Frequently Asked Questions

PRP Therapy Questions

Is PRP made from my own blood?

Yes. PRP is prepared from a sample of the patient's own blood, which is processed to create platelet-rich plasma for use in the planned procedure.

Is PRP appropriate for everyone?

No. Whether PRP should be considered depends on the clinical problem, examination findings, health history, treatment goals and other individual factors.

Does PRP guarantee that damaged tissue will regenerate?

No. Individual outcomes vary, and PRP should not be viewed as a guarantee that cartilage, tendons or other tissues will regenerate. Kimberly discusses reasonable expectations, alternatives and limitations during your evaluation.

Start With the Right Question

Wondering Whether PRP Could Be an Option for You?

You shouldn't have to choose a regenerative procedure before someone has evaluated the problem you're trying to solve.

A comprehensive consultation with Kimberly Pierson, PA-C can help clarify what may be contributing to your concern, determine whether PRP deserves consideration and map out appropriate next steps based on your individual findings and goals.
