Ultrasound-Guided Injections

When Precision Matters. Ultrasound Allows the Anatomy to Be Viewed in Real Time.

Musculoskeletal pain can involve joints, tendons, ligaments, bursae, nerves and other soft tissues located close together. Knowing where symptoms are coming from can be an important part of planning an injection-based procedure.

BioRenew Integrative Medicine may use musculoskeletal ultrasound during selected procedures to visualize relevant anatomy in real time and help guide needle placement based on the individual treatment plan.

Real-Time Imaging

Ultrasound provides real-time visualization of selected soft-tissue and musculoskeletal structures.

Anatomy-Focused

Relevant joints, tendons, bursae, nerves and surrounding tissues may be visualized when appropriate.

Procedure Guidance

Ultrasound may help guide needle positioning during selected injection-based procedures.

Individualized Care

Image guidance is used as part of a treatment plan based on the patient's evaluation and findings.

Understanding Ultrasound Guidance

Seeing the Anatomy While the Procedure Is Performed

Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of structures beneath the skin. Depending on the area being evaluated, ultrasound may allow the clinician to visualize muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae, joints, nerves and other soft tissues.

During selected injection procedures, the ultrasound image can be used to observe the relevant anatomy and guide the needle toward the intended location while the procedure is taking place.

Where Ultrasound Guidance May Be Used

Different Procedures Require Different Levels of Planning

Joint Procedures

Ultrasound guidance may be used during selected procedures involving joints such as the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow or other appropriate areas.

Tendon & Soft-Tissue Procedures

Tendons, bursae and other soft tissues may be visualized during selected procedures when precise identification of the intended treatment area is clinically useful.

Nerve-Focused Procedures

Ultrasound may be used to visualize selected peripheral nerves and surrounding anatomy during procedures such as nerve hydrodissection when clinically appropriate.

Regenerative Procedures

When a regenerative or orthobiologic procedure is considered, ultrasound guidance may be incorporated into procedural planning depending on the treatment area and individual circumstances.

Guidance Is Only Part of the Procedure

Ultrasound Helps Guide the Injection — It Doesn't Decide the Treatment

Ultrasound guidance is a procedural tool. It does not determine whether an injection is appropriate or which medication, biologic preparation or other treatment should be used.

Those decisions begin with the clinical evaluation. Kimberly considers the patient's symptoms, examination findings, relevant imaging, medical history, previous treatments and goals before recommending a particular procedure.

If an injection is appropriate, ultrasound guidance may then be used when it provides meaningful procedural value for the specific anatomy and intended treatment location.

  • Treatment-option discussion
  • Ultrasound guidance when appropriate

What To Expect

Your Ultrasound-Guided Procedure Path

1

Evaluate the Problem

Kimberly begins by understanding your symptoms, function, health history and what you hope to accomplish.

2

Identify the Anatomy

Relevant anatomy and clinical findings are evaluated to help determine whether an injection-based procedure is appropriate.

3

Guide the Procedure

When appropriate, ultrasound is used during the procedure to visualize the intended area and guide needle positioning.

4

Plan Follow-Up Care

Follow-up recommendations depend on the procedure performed, your response and your individual treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ultrasound-Guided Injection Questions

What does ultrasound guidance do?

Ultrasound creates real-time images of selected structures beneath the skin. During some procedures, those images may be used to help guide needle placement toward the intended treatment area.

Does every injection need ultrasound guidance?

No. Whether ultrasound guidance is appropriate depends on the anatomy, type of procedure, clinical circumstances and treatment plan.

Does ultrasound guidance guarantee a better outcome?

No. Ultrasound is a procedural imaging tool and does not guarantee a particular treatment result. Outcomes depend on many factors, including the underlying condition, procedure performed and individual patient circumstances.

Start With the Right Evaluation

Wondering Whether an Image-Guided Procedure Could Be Appropriate?

The first step isn't choosing an injection. It's understanding the anatomy, identifying what may be contributing to your symptoms and determining whether a procedure makes sense for your situation.

A comprehensive consultation with Kimberly Pierson, PA-C can help evaluate your concern, discuss appropriate treatment options and determine whether ultrasound guidance may be useful as part of your individualized care plan.

Important Information: Ultrasound guidance is an imaging and procedural tool used to visualize selected anatomy in real time and may be used to assist with needle placement during certain procedures. Ultrasound guidance does not itself determine whether a treatment is appropriate and does not guarantee a particular clinical outcome. The regulatory status, evidence, risks and appropriate use of any medication, biologic preparation or other product used during an injection depend on the specific product and intended use.
